Step Back to Move Forward: The Benefits of Taking Breaks
Today, I was working right from 10:00 am and was coding until almost 5:30, I definitely wrote a lot of code but at the end of the day, I felt like I don't have the energy to eat. I worked non stop apart from the small lunch break I took, there was absolutely nothing and at the end of the day I was fully drained out. That's when I realised why not write about taking breaks. By breaks mean, it can be anything, break from social media, break from work, break from a relationship, anything that makes you feel drained it's worth taking a break. So today I collected some wonderful quotes to talk about taking breaks.
This is wonderful and I have experienced this myself, taking breaks helps you clear your mind, gain new perspectives and come back with a fresh approach. This is so true, this is so self explanatory, but one example I remember was back when I worked at Amazon, there was a time I was exhausted and then I went to India and when I came back, I was so so motivated to work, I had better strategies about working and figure out things, I genuinely gained perspective when I went to India.
As they say, everyone should spend some quiet time with themselves, no one but themselves. It's a crucial element of life. When we go through the everyday hustles, we all need to find time to talk to ourself. Whether that's on a walk or whether that's while driving, spending alone time in nature, doing nothing is crucial for our mental health. So whenever you find a chance to do nothing, do nothing, actually nothing, because that will give you perspective or ideas you didn't think about. So relax, have faith and make sure you focus on the things that are in your control.
Again a big believer of this statement. Sometimes you need to take a break from everyone and spend some time alone, go on dates alone, go to restaurants alone and learn to appreciate the little pleasures of life. So why is taking breaks so crucial?
1. Improved Focus and Productivity: It's very natural that when you take a break, you relax a little and this helps you give you a new sense of focus and productivity when you come back. This can be a small 10 minute break while studying or it can also be a 3-4 day vacation so you are completely disconnected from work.
2. Mental Health: In our stressful lives we all want to achieve more and more and in the process of achieving more we might burn out and not have the energy to do anymore. So break helps you to destress and improve your mental health, which in turn will improve a lot of other things like your relationships, your work and your overall health. If you are healthy from your mind, you will be healthy from your body and vice versa is also true.
3. Creativity Boost: When you are doing too much work, you might not really get any new ideas but you would want to be focused on getting more things done. But when you take a break you might find a solution to a problem that's innovative and you wouldn't have thought about it if not for the break. So whenever you are focused too much on the problem and it does not get resolved, it's easier to just go ahead and take a break. There's absolutely nothing wrong in taking a 10-15 minute break.
4. Better decision making: When we are fatigued our ability to decide goes away. Especially, our thinking capabilities are impacted while being fatigued. So when you take a break and come back you would be able to think more clearly and have more insights about the work. Which in turn will lead to a more analytical decision making than a hurried one.
5. Social Interaction: When you take a break, you get a chance to interact with others socially and thereby making you feel like you are a part of the community. This will increase your overall life satisfaction along with work thus making you feel more whole and fulfilled.
So all in all I would just say, learn to take breaks from everything and chill once in a while. Apart from the reasons above, I believe this will be a game changer for the rest of your life, not just today.
