The Importance of Speaking Up: Finding Your Voice and Protecting Your Boundaries

Image
There are days when someone does something that's not correct and you have to speak up. For an example, someone did spit while talking to on the phone and the water went into the food and they do not apologise, you would have to speak up and say go somewhere else and talk. But if we do not speak up, the consequences are even bad. So today's point is about speaking up. We'll discuss why we need to speak, how to speak up and what are the best ways to speak up in any given circumstance. By speaking up, it only means that you are standing up for yourself. In a world that's brutal, that is dominating at times, it's very important to stand up for yourself and speak up. Once you do that, you will really have true freedom. But at the same time, it's also important to remember to choose your battles carefully.  Firstly let's think about why should we stand up for ourselves? Let's start by thinking what will happen if you don't standup for yourself. Let's ...

Why We Shouldn't Sweat the Small Stuff

Image
I was talking to a colleague today from my office and then we spoke about how he would do budgeting in percentages and he would only think about stuff in percentages. We were then going to eat something and then I was talking about 10$ or 15$ and stuff like that, he told me don't zoom life so much that you forget the big picture about life. It's more important to care about the percentages, suppose if you decide to spend 5% of your money on food, it does not matter if its 5.1% but it does matter only if its 15-20%+ when you decided 5%. So he told me not to zoom life so much but too zoom out and view the big picture. That's when I realised that all of us somedays are so concerned about the little things that happen in life, whether it's the traffic you found while travelling or going somewhere, whether its a work colleague who told you something that you didn't like hearing or whether it was a friend who made fun of you and you didn't take the joke well, whatever...

Small Moments, Big Joy: The Secret to a Fulfilled Life

Image
A lot of times in life I think what am I working for? What is this life all about? Yes in order to live well, I need to contribute well, fine but what makes life worth living? If I keep working and working and working, I might enjoy only to a certain extent. If I keep playing and playing and playing, I will be tired of playing. If I keep waiting for the next achievement when I get one, I keep waiting for my happiness. But in all truth I realised that real joy is in the every day moments. The simple moments, the little things that make life joyful. It's the smile on the front desk that I enjoy watching when I go to work, it's a new born baby smiling and giggling is what I enjoy more than my promotions, not that I don't enjoy promotions, but I enjoy watching a baby smile and giggle a little more. It's the forehead kiss from a lover that one enjoys more than the other things. It's the first drops of rain and dancing in that rain one enjoys, it's the steps of garba...

Step Back to Move Forward: The Benefits of Taking Breaks

Image
Today, I was working right from 10:00 am and was coding until almost 5:30, I definitely wrote a lot of code but at the end of the day, I felt like I don't have the energy to eat. I worked non stop apart from the small lunch break I took, there was absolutely nothing and at the end of the day I was fully drained out. That's when I realised why not write about taking breaks. By breaks mean, it can be anything, break from social media, break from work, break from a relationship, anything that makes you feel drained it's worth taking a break. So today I collected some wonderful quotes to talk about taking breaks.  This is wonderful and I have experienced this myself, taking breaks helps you clear your mind, gain new perspectives and come back with a fresh approach. This is so true, this is so self explanatory, but one example I remember was back when I worked at Amazon, there was a time I was exhausted and then I went to India and when I came back, I was so so motivated to wor...

Breaking Free: Overcoming the Habit of Overthinking

Image
A lot of times we go to a party or at work we go to standups, or we are just hanging out with our friends, and we say something and then realise maybe I should have not said this or done that. But in reality that would be 10-20% of the times and with all honesty the probability of something going wrong will be there for at most 10-20%. That's where I realised the real problem is not anyone but overthinking everything. So what is overthinking in the realest terms, "Overthinking to me is simply when we think about scenarios over and over again and how this thing can go wrong, how that thing can go wrong, how anything in the world can go wrong." But the truth is if you don't do it, you'll never know it as everything that can go wrong, can go right as well. Oxford dictionary defines overthinking as this, " the  action  of  thinking  about something too much, in a way that is not  useful ". It's simply the action of thinking about something too much, in a...

Why Persistence is the Key to Overcoming Obstacles and Achieving Growth

Image
A lot of us talk about the growth mindset, but do we really break things down what growth really looks like? Probably there are many ways to define it, but for me when I really think about growth, it's about challenge and persistence. But let's pause and think about what persistence is and how is it defined. This is what google defines persistence as, " firm or  obstinate   continuance  in a course of action in  spite  of difficulty or opposition ". Once your goal is determined, then persistence means you stick with it, i.e a firm or obstinate continuance in a course of action in spite of difficulty or opposition. So sticking to your goal, is what is persistence. No matter what happens you don't move the goal(unless the goal is really really wrong), you change execution plans but the goal remains the same. So I am going to consider a few quotes on persistence:  "A river cuts through rock, not because of its power, but because of its persistence." This...

The Real You: Embracing Authenticity in Life and Work

Image
In my opinion, authenticity is all about being real. Whether that's being real with work colleagues, being real with your own self or being real with anyone you meet. It's talking about the good and also talking about the bad. It's understanding that everyone's good points, but also being empathetic with people's bad points. That's what makes one person authentic. Now even in actions one needs to be authentic, if you don't believe in a certain type of action, it's better not to do it. If you don't believe in alcohol, don't drink. If you don't believe in working too hard, don't do it. Do what you believe in, that's being authentic. If you have to say no to alcohol, saying no is authentic. The truth about authenticity is that we feel we should be perfect inorder to be liked, but the reality is we need to be real in order to be liked. No one likes a person who's too perfect. So I am going to go in order of what authenticity looks lik...

Why Responding is Better Than Reacting: Strategies for Maintaining Calm and Control in Chaotic Times

Today, I see a lot of people in the world, who are simply reacting to what's happening around them and what's happening around them is chaos. Just pure chaos. Now, reacting to chaos creates more chaos. However, as we grow it's so important to respond rather than reacting. I would say responding means, just taking 2 or 3 seconds extra while responding, thus making sure that you maintain your calmness. Here are a few reasons why responding is better than reacting:  1. Emotional Control : Whenever one person says something to the other person, let's say if someone just says something really negative to you or about you. It's very likely that you can get agitated, angry or even you might start crying. But that's an emotional response to what the person just said. If someone is able to manipulate you emotionally, it's very likely that the emotional response can give a negative thought to you. Basically, you give your control to the other person.  2. Improved Comm...

Doing the basics right

Image
Yesterday, while talking to a friend, I was speaking about doing the basics and the fundamentals right. For an example, if the root of the tree is strong, the tree will be strong and not the other way round. But when we struggle there might be certain very basic things that we might not be doing right? Maybe it's not eating on time, not sleeping on time, not working out on time or maybe not working out at all. At a higher level, we have 3 major areas. Our health, our work and our relationships. And every area has its own basic requirement, for an example our body needs certain amount of protein and carbs. For our work, we at least need to be productive for 3-4 hours in a day and for our relationships, we need to make sure that the people know that we care about them and so on and so forth. Being inclusive is something equally important. In a gist, if good health is the fruit of a tree, then the root is eating and exercising right. If good work is the fruit, then being focused, havi...
